I thoroughly enjoyed the premise of this book, mostly because I'm a sucker for fairytales with a good princess and a dark, brooding love interest(in this case, Paxton "skirt-raiser" Seabolt). Plus, who doesn't love a fantasy including a competition for the princess' hand in marriage? Wendy Higgins did a wonderful job of world-building for her first high fantasy, which I applaud, but in the end the story really just didn't grip me like I'd hoped it would. Still looking forward to the sequel so I can get more of the amazing characters and hopefully a happy resolve to the love story ;)

I have a lot of feelings towards this book.

For some reason I don't know if I should place my dislikes of this book on Wendy Higgins or the publishing team. Why? Because Wendy is one of my favorite authors and she does not drag her books like she has dragged this one.

I liked the story, I like how fast paced it is. I liked the different point of views although they were told in 3rd person. I liked the characters. I liked pretty much everything but it really dragged. While reading it, I kept asking myself "Wendy did your team tell you to write this unnecessary paragraph so it can be a duology and that way they can make more money off it?"

I felt like Wendy had this amazing story to tell but then unnecessary pages, paragraphs, and chapters were added to give the book length.

And although it dragged, it was never boring to me because I enjoyed the story and the characters. I found myself wanting to read the book every little chance I had because the story was building.

I certainly look forward to the second book and hope it's not as dragged as this one.
