I actually listened to the audiobook of it and it was a summary of the book. It took 4 hours to listen to it all.
It has stunning social experiments and results with clear explanations about human behavior.
To summarize in one sentence, we are all liars in different levels and aspects.

My rating and review reflect more on my state while reading the book rather than the book itself. I was in a rough patch in terms of reading habit and had fallen behind and become inconsistent with my reading. I had already checked out the book from the library and due to personal reasons couldn't return it. 

I ended up forcing my self to read the book. It's written well but is formulaic and repetitive. There are some interesting insights which I've found useful and patterns I've started observing, both in my self and others. Maybe I'll read the book again and revisit my rating.

المواضيع الموجودة في الكتاب مهمة. لا أستطيع ان اقرأ و اسمع هذا الكتاب الا و انا اتخيل نفسي في نقاش مع شخص من داعمي فريق "المشكلة فينا". هل تعرف شخص ينتمي لهذا الفريق ؟

عند مناقشة اي مشكلة مجتمعية، ينبري هذا الفريق بالقاء اللوم على الناس و ليس على السلطة المنظمة للمجتمع. أثناء عرض المحتوى، يؤكد هذا الكتاب اننا عرضة للفساد حتى لو كنا نتمتع بأخلاق الأنبياء من دون ان ندري 

يورد الكاتب نكتة تعرض الموضوع بشكل واضح:
ابن سرق قلم زميله في الفصل، يعاتبه الأب في المنزل. يصرخ في وجهه: لماذا فعلت هذا؟ هل انا احرمك من شيء؟! لماذا لم تخبرني باحتياجك للقلم و كنت أحضرت لك 10 أقلام من مكتبي؟

انت لا تدرك دائما الفساد الذي انت فيه. 

الحكومة و المؤسسات التي تعمل بكفاءة و نزاهة، قادرة على انتشال مجتمع كانل من الفساد، او على الأقل الحد منه.

هناك تجربة مثيرة أوردها الكتاب: اذا وضعت الناس في ظروف محكمة تدفعهم للفساد و الغش، سيذهبون الى هذا الطريق. لكن سيحاولون فعل ذلك بطريقة لا تؤذي "صورتهم الاجتماعية" ... هذا مهم جدا عند الناس .

I like Dan Ariely's curiosity, open mind, his data-based approach and his direct style.

The (honest) truth about dishonesty is a fascinating read, challenging our intuitive ideas about who, when and why we all cheat. It is a little bit scarry and sad.

We are pulled between our desire to gain (by cheating) and our image of ourselves as "good" people. The "fudge factor" helps us reconcile them through (obvious) rationalisations.

We cheat for personal gain, but also to help others. Cheating is contagious, through changes in our perceived social norms. There are a few "tricks" to reduce cheating, moral reminders for example. But basically, it's pretty bad.

Understanding what is going on is a first step, but there is no silver bullet...

Good read. On a personal level, but also for managers, teachers and people in other professional settings.

The book is my first in the genre of behavorial sciences. 
Dan Ariely speaks about how we justify dishonesty, fudge factor involved while speaking the whole truth etc. Some of the examples such as the golfer's honesty, grandmother's dying closer to exams etc are interesting and very relatable. 
But the experiments on human behavior get very repetitive, completing this book then does become a little difficult. All those who loves books on human psychology should definitely read it.

Social psychology is fun to read about and this book which focuses on lying does not disappoint. It was interesting to see which factors influence one's likelihood to cheat. Some findings seem obvious while others are surprising. 

Two things stood out to me. One, that creative people are more likely to cheat because they can self-rationalize better and two, that of the 98574293742 who read this book, not many are going to put it into practice because it's kinda difficult and troublesome. I tried thinking of how to reduce cheating in a classroom but couldn't come up with any solutions. Maybe, that's just me.

One of things that influence your likelihood to cheat is whether you have been primed with religious codes/moral codes or stuff that reminds you that it's wrong to cheat. Well just after reading this book, I was told I had won a prize for a headline I did not come up with. Well, what do you think I did? :p
