I absolutely adored this book! Katniss’ voice is so well-written and realistic for a traumatised teenage girl. I enjoyed her interactions with Haymitch, who is hilariously pitiful and undoubtedly tragic. I also really enjoyed Katniss’s relationship with Peeta. It gives off a black cat girlfriend and golden retriever boyfriend vibe. Peeta is honestly a breath of fresh air as a love interest; he’s not moody or abusive, he’s kind and is surprisingly mature for a sixteen-year-old boy. I know there’s a shipping war amongst the fandom over Team Peeta and Team Gale, but honestly, Gale currently doesn’t seem like much competition. Maybe that will change in book 2. 

The description of the capital and the behaviour of its residents really emphasises how effectively the city’s propaganda has dehumanised the districts in their eyes. I hope to see more of that in book two as well. 

This was one of the BEST first books of a series I’ve read, I can’t wait to read more!

A few steps into the woods grows a bank of wildflowers. Perhaps they are really weeds of some sort, but they have blossoms in beautiful shades of violet and yellow and white. I gather up an armful and come back to Rue's side. Slowly, one stem at a time, I decorate her body in the flowers. Covering the ugly wound. Wreathing her face. Weaving her hair with bright colors.

They'll have to show it. Or, even if they choose to turn the cameras elsewhere at this moment, they'll have to bring them back when they collect the bodies and everyone will see her then and know I did it. I step back and take a last look at Rue. She could really be asleep in that meadow after all.

I completely forgot that it is actually a compelling story and Katniss is a fun character. Also, reading it as an adult really makes the whole concept far more disturbing! Welcome to another edition of reading a book way after its released and after thinking for years that I was never going to enjoy the books after watching the movies, I’m now on the other side of the book asking myself why I didn’t read these growing up as I think that this would have kick started my love of Fantasy!

In a post-apocalyptic future, life has turned extremely hard. Fighting poverty and hunger every day, sixteen years old hunter Katniss does absolutely everything in her power to have enough for her defenceless little sister, and a barely lucid mother. Life is hard, yet not impossible, until the one fateful day arrives. Once every year, the ever-vigilant all-powerful Capitol of Panem celebrates for their entertainment the “Hunger Games”, a yearly tournament where a handful representatives of each district are forced to fight in a massive arena, to the death. In a sad turn of events, young Katniss will have to fight not only for herself, but for the future of her starving family.

This was book that I couldn’t put down, I also must admit that it’s been years since I last watched the movies so that didn’t tint my experience, so it was like reading this all for the first time and experience every twist and turn that there is within the story and there are lot. When I had to put the book down all I wanted to do was pick it back up again to get lost again

The story has just the perfect combination of action, drama, and romance. It has a great message that you can stay human even in the most inhumane conditions. The world Collins created is extremely believable, and the dilemmas that are presented are engaging and sometimes just painful to watch, but she pulls this off with ease. People just must read the book themselves to comprehend what I'm trying to say.

reading this after watching the movies countless times really made me feel way more emotions than the movies did. 

knowing katniss on a more deeper level was everything. i loved her persona and how you could tell she was just a sixteen year old girl trying to survive. 

being able to see the slight (and major) differences from novel to movie was so important to me. 

i loved the slight romance part even though initially it was just for the games you could clearly get more of a grasp on how katniss actually felt compared to the movies. 

also i fear i cried more in the deaths than i did in the movies. it just felt way more intimate reading it. 

admittedly the writing felt off? like i don’t know what it was but something was different. 

overall i enjoyed this way more than the movies and im so excited to dive into the next one.

The book had a lot to live up to (expectation-wise). I grew up watching the franchise and I finally decided to jump into reading the book. It was worth every second. Katniss is much more enjoyable in the book then in the movie. It was easy to root for her. You get to know Katniss better in the book. The relationship between Peeta and Katniss was also enjoyable to watch unfold. Even if Katniss was too dense to realize that Peeta truly does have feelings for her. I would most definitely recommend.

while you’re reading the book, you can’t help but wonder how anyone could allow such violence to happen to children? then you’ll remember that this level of violence does happen to children in real life and it makes the book even more haunting.
