I read this book for a book club where it was pitched a “Big Little Lies, the early years.” Like Big Little Lies, the book focuses on four close friends with many secrets between them. The framework of The Other’s Gold separates the book into four parts wherein each of the four friends commits the worst act of her life.

I really enjoyed the first two sections of the book where the four are still living together and in college. I love a college setting (especially in the fall) and also really enjoyed the way the girls became friends. College is one of those life experiences that really does bond a group of people, if the bond doesn’t last beyond school and I liked being brought back to that time in my own life.

The second half of the book wasn’t as engaging to me, less because it moved beyond college and more because it became clear we weren’t going to be given the same insight into each of the characters. It seemed like each section would be narrated by a different girl, but truthfully only one character felt fully developed while two were somewhat explored and the fourth I felt like I barely understood at all by the end of the book.

I appreciated the way the women personified different issues young women often face, but I wish each character had been given equal importance within the story.
