           I liked this final installment of the trilogy much more than The Shadow in the North, actually, mostly because of its more political and social stories. This is, I think, where Pullman really shines. Including commentaries on capitalism, socialism, poverty, and the persecution of the Jews, he skillfully weaves history into fiction. The book is much longer than the other two and contains a more harrowing story--Sally is the underdog throughout, barely hanging on to life and limb, and it proceeds in a series of consecutive blows to her life and livelihood, really up until the last few pages. It is depressing in all the right ways, however, for Sally's salvation ultimately comes at the hands of socialist Jews, who take her in, protect her from her enemies, and ultimately, provide her with a life's purpose and a husband. As with the other two, there are some corny moments and things can be a bit heavy-handed, but as far as young adult novels go, it's not too bad. Altogether a really enjoyable read, and at times even inspiring. As an anti-capitalist myself, I was thrilled that Pullman's real target, in the final analysis, is capitalism itself.
