I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book. Canavan wrote another series I've been dying to read, so I knew when I saw this on offer on Book Depository I had to give it a chance, but it was still an author I had no experience with.

The premise is quite original, a book that used to be a person talking to whoever holds it? A girl who has magic but is terrified to use it in fear of offending the angels? This all sounded like a story that could get confusing or be really awesome. Thankfully I enjoyed it.

The writing was excellent, although sometimes I got a bit confused with the detail and lengthy descriptions or the more specific detailed things which happened, but I think that was more my attention span than anything else. I also wished for a map during a lot of the travelling, I couldn't grasp what was happening, I normally welcome the inclusion of a world map in fantasy novels, but this had none. I think I can guess as to why it didn't, but still it would have been nice.

I am not normally a huge fan of switching stories within the book, where you follow multiple characters lives, I find myself growing more attached to one character's story than the other. This wasn't the case with Thief's Magic, instead I'd find myself fully involved with both, and whilst when the story switched character I was still a little hung up on the other's story, I could easily get back into the story for the other. This shows how good Canavan is at both her story development, but at writing the characters themselves. I think if I hadn't become so attached to them when they were first introduced this wouldn't have been the case. I think it helped that initially you spent several chapters with either Tyen or Rielle before the story shift, it was only later on you got more frequent switching. That was smart of Canavan because it meant the she had plenty of time to develop the story to begun with, and then at the end as the pacing increased so did the perspective switch.

As a whole, I really enjoyed the book. I wanted to give it 5 stars, but there is something holding me back from giving it. I loved the story, but it isn't the crazed love I get from some books. I'm convinced that is because I'm holding out for the rest of the series being just as good. There is every chance once I've read it all my rating could change. I think the fact there is still so much story left untold is what prevents me from giving it that extra star, and there is nothing that can be done about that except wait for the next book in the series.

Thief's Magic by Trudi Canavan is from two different points of view.  Tyen is a student wizard who is also studying as a historian.  He finds a magic book that will learn everything about a person if they touch it.

Rielle is a woman in a society where only priests are allowed to learn magic.  Rielle can see when magic has been used, and so has the ability to learn magic.

They both have to learn some truths that will change their worlds for them, and can affect others.

I thought this was a good story with lots of set up for the following books.

Interesting story

I enjoyed the premise that magic is a finite thing that once used disappears for a time. A good start to an interesting story.

So... why does the male character get the exciting story line and the female character get the romance story line?
