So far this one is my favourite. As I was reading it I started seeing less Hopkins and more mikkelsen (I watched the films/series first)

Still good, I love anything Lecter and I really liked getting to peer into the creation of the monster we all know and love. That being said, I found it quite dry and unfulfilling.

Sangat disayangkan sekali seri Hannibal Lecter ini berakhir dengan kurang memuaskan untukku, karena seperti buku sebelumnya, aku memiliki ekspektasi yang cukup tinggi untuk buku ini. Pertama-tama, aku harus menjelaskan bahwa aku tidak tahu apakah kekecewaanku ini disebabkan oleh terjemahannya, atau memang ceritanya yang tidak berhasil memberikan kepuasan untukku. Entah mengapa sejak mulai membaca buku ini, banyak hal yang membingungkan bagiku—dan ceritanya pun tidak berhasil menarik perhatianku. Meskipun begitu, tentu saja aku mendorong diriku sendiri untuk terus membaca; karena aku selalu penasaran dengan latar belakang kehidupan Hannibal Lecter dan apa yang membuatnya jadi sosok yang demikian menyeramkan.

Seperti buku sebelumnya, alur ceritanya berjalan cukup lambat—sehingga harus bersabar sebagian besar waktu aku membacanya. Diawali dengan kisah keluarga Lecter yang hidup makmur dan bahagia; serta memperkenalkan karakter Hannibal yang sangat cerdas dengan kemampuan di atas rata-rata. Semuanya memburuk ketika tempat Hannibal hanya tinggal berdua saja dengan adik perempuannya, Mischa, sementara semuanya meninggal. Kejadian yang terjadi pada Hannibal dan Mischa meninggalkan trauma yang hebat dalam dirinya yang masih kecil. Dan dari situlah awal mula segalanya; kemarahan yang bersemayam dalam hatinya memicu hasrat untuk membalas dendam. Yang selanjutnya terjadi adalah proses bagaimana Hannibal melacak orang-orang yang bertanggung jawab atas kematian adiknya, dan caranya membalaskan dendam. Sewaktu membaca, aku selalu tidak sabar menantikan Hannibal beraksi, tetapi ada beberapa bagian buku ini yang terasa bertele-tele. Mungkin bagian tersebut bertujuan untuk meningkatkan intensitas ceritanya, namun sayangnya aku tidak merasa demikian—yang mungkin juga disebabkan oleh terjemahannya. Walaupun aku kurang puas dengan alurnya, tentu saja masih ada momen-momen yang berhasil membuatku menganga lebar karena aku tidak menduga apa yang Hannibal rencanakan. Bagian-bagian itulah yang mendorongku memberikan rating 2.5 untuk buku ini. Dan meskipun pada akhirnya aku tidak begitu menyukai buku ini, setidaknya sekarang aku tahu lebih banyak tentang masa lalu Hannibal dan 'aksi-aksi' perdananya.
"Dia tidak tersiksa oleh amarah pada Grentz. Dia sama sekali tidak tersiksa oleh kemarahan lagi, atau oleh mimpi-mimpi. Ini untuk senang-senang saja dan membunuh Grentz lebih menyenangkan daripada main ski."...

I vaguely recall having watched the film version a few years back, but expected more nuance in the book given Harris's other work. The tough part about selling this is having some great plot building up to one of the most famous villains in modern literature, but not having the character overdone in comparison to his later (expectedly scarier) self. While not as engaging as I remember his other books, this was certainly interesting and entertaining. He does have some lovely turns of phrase that made me stop and reread several sections to appreciate not only his language, but the means of expression, and creativity.

Hannibal Lecter as Macgyver? Just no. Disappointing prequel unworthy of such a complex & iconic character. 

Why did it earn 3 stars from me? Because it started out with an interesting first act before it turned in a direction that was just wrong.

I read this book for the reading rush, for the prompt "read a book that inspired a movie you have already seen". So I already so the movie, one of my favorite of the whole Lecter saga. And I must say that the movie is quite accurate to the book.

This is not an easy book to read even if it is not horrible either. The beginning is harsh for little Hannibal and I can't deny I felt pity for him. To me the whole plot made sense with the rest of the story of Hannibal. But it was rather long, a good 60% to 70% the story doesn't really go forward and thankfully I saw the movie before because otherwise it would have been really boring to me. With that the writing style is really detached and cold to asserts the emotional death of Hannibal so it's kind of boring in the beginning.
Other than that I found the characters well developed and the writing easy to go through.

This was by far the most “disappointing” book in the series. 
It really wasn’t what I was expecting. 
It was a complicated story, which I didn’t always understand and with a lot of side-stories, which, in my opinion, didn’t really matter for the bigger story. 

All-in-all, the book did explain how Hannibal became the monster and it was nice to know how and who he was as a child. 

The book wasn’t bad, but it’s certainly not my favourite of the series.
