I picked up this book because it was on Modern Mrs. Darcy's 2019 summer reading guide and I'm glad I did! It's a quick read written in epistolary format (emails and letters) about two teenage girls who start out horrified that their dads are dating and end up choosing to be sisters of a sort. It's a light read but there is a lot under the surface to think about too. It was fun to read this in one day and about one sitting.

"To Night Owl from Dogfish" hätte ich mir wohl nie gekauft, wäre es nicht auf meiner Sommerleseliste 2019 gelandet, um mal Neues auszuprobieren.
Mir wäre etwas Tolles entgangen.

Holly Goldberg Sloan und Meg Wolitzer erzählen hier eine Geschichte über Familie, Liebe und Freundschaft.

Avery und Bett sind zu Beginn eine Schicksalsgemeinschaft. Ihre Väter haben sich ineinander verliebt und möchten, dass die Mädchen sich kennenlernen, ohne zunächst etwas von den Hintergründen zu wissen - was natürlich nicht funktioniert.
Es sind zwei sehr unterschiedliche Charaktere, die sich nun in einer Situation sehen, mit der sie irgendwie umgehen müssen, ob sie wollen oder nicht. 
Sie gehen das Ganze aber sehr schnell mit viel Neugierde und Offenheit an und werden selbst aktiv. Was zu den lustigsten Begebenheiten führt.
Ich habe wirklich oft beim Lesen gelacht. Die beiden Mädels haben so unterschiedliche Einstellungen zum Leben und wirken dabei ungewollt komisch, sind es doch letzten Endes Kinder, die noch nicht alle Zusammenhänge verstehen und sich die Welt so bauen, wie sie sie sehen. 

Auch alle anderen Figuren, die in den übereifrigen Strudel der Kids geraten, sind sehr liebevoll dargestellt mit wiederum eigenen Weltvorstellungen und Herangehensweisen an Probleme. 

Jeder Charakter trägt einen Teil zum Gelingen dieser wundervollen Story bei und am Ende entsteht ein tolles Gesamtbild über das, was Vertrauen und Respekt angeht. 

"To Night Owl from Dogfish" ist nicht nur ein wirklich tolles Kinderbuch, das glücklicherweise auch bald auf Deutsch erscheint, sondern birgt auch die ein oder andere Einsicht und auf jeden Fall gute Unterhaltung für Erwachsene.

I am still weighing the star rating, I am between a 3.5 and 4 right now.

This was seriously cute! Not what I expected but still really fun. I was (somewhat) surprised by certain parts which kept it interesting, and found a lot of myself in Avery. Definitely worth a read. Told in a series of letters and emails- this would be great for fans of the diary-like series/books as I was as a kid. It is also a great LGBTQ+ rep! 

This book is told almost entirely in email exchanges between two 12 year old girls named Bett and Avery. They live on opposite coasts, and have never met, but as it turns out, these girls have something big in common. They both are daughters of single, gay dads and as it turns out, both dads meet (cute) at a convention and insta-love is born. They are so convinced of their love that they have decided to send their daughters to summer camp so that they can get to know each other while the dads spend some much needed time together on an adventure in China. The girls are not on board and try their best to find ways to destroy this plan. Now that I am stepping away from this story, a lot of it is a bit of a stretch. The girls find out about each other and their father's plan because they are so involved in their dad's lives that they were able to access their emails. Instead of the parent invading the privacy of their kids, it is the other way around? And let's just talk about the insta-love of these grown ass men for a second. Uh no. I think the girls were on to something when they felt like it was too much too fast. Other than some hard to believe elements, this was a surprisingly cute book! I enjoyed reading the girls emails and watching their friendship blossom. The ending was a twist, but I really actually enjoyed it a lot. Much better than I thought the ending was heading towards. All in all, it was a pretty solid read. Great for summer as a bunch of it takes place at summer camp.

It's a novel about the true meaning of family, written by two exceptional and beloved authors. Avery Bloom is anxious and academic and afraid of the water. Bett Devlin is brash and athletic and loves to surf. The only things they seem to have in common are their age – twelve – and the fact that their dads have fallen in love with each other. Now their dads are sending them to the same sleepaway camp, against their will, so that they can become friends. But when the girls reluctantly grow to like each other and start looking forward to becoming a family, their dads fall out of love. Can Avery and Bett figure out a way to bring their fathers back together now that they can't imagine a life without a stepsister?
