A sharp, detailed spy thriller that takes its time to set up the moving parts with methodical precision. 

While I enjoy Clancy’s writing despite his political leaning, and I’m aware of the “America is the best country in the world!” moments, this one has a few superfluous moments where Jack’s wife complains about how the evils of socialized medicine lead to lazy doctors and substandard medicine (as she’s working in a British hospital), and this whole subplot didn’t lead anywhere. I would have thought it would lead to her deciding to challenge the higher ups and advocate for change or get a better position, but it’s just there primarily to give her something to do. Now, perhaps it was meant to set up her relief at coming back to America at the end of the next chronological book, Red October, but overall, it felt like something that could have been trimmed way down as it didn’t add much to the story.

But overall, I do like how this adds in some continuity for Jack’s character between Patriot Games and Red October, and the Cold War espionage story is so good.

I was concerned that this one was written quite a ways after the other books as a sort of retroactive inbetween-quel, but aside from getting the release date of Transformers wrong, this fit into the (often shaky) continuity of the Ryanverse well.

Read this for the cracking technical espionage stuff, chuckle in amusement at the quaint Republican idealism.
