Such a great story I wish there was way more spice. I believe that it was very descriptive and easy to understand.

First book of the new year and we're starting off strong!

First, I'm going to level with ya: was this the best book ever? No. Was it the most beautifully written? No, it was rather juvenile. Did it have the deepest story? Heck no. 

I will say this. The characters were the parts that truly shined. They had really good, obvious character development, and that is not something I can say about a lot of books. This was definitely more character-driven than plot, and in my opinion, that really worked for it.

What plot is there is a tiny bit misleading. The book makes you think it's the grand adventure to save the universe. While it is a grand adventure, it's more of a rescue mission and a mystery instead of that. It also prioritizes the romance more than the main plot. 

However, if you go into this book expecting a fun, drama-filled romance like I did, then the book really works. I highly recommend it to people who like romantasy. This is that genre, just in a sci-fi setting instead.

(Also, those plot-twists at the end? Holy crap I did not see them coming! Well done authors!)

Overall, if you know what to expect and you happen to like romances that read like popcorn-entertainment, then I really recommend this book. Check it out if you want some fun!

But DAMN was it FUN!!

A dying sun, overly powerful empire, dissident rebels - this has the all the makings of a great sci-fi romance but this is also bit more on the fantasy side as well.  A motley crew of misfits, from all walks of life, are shoved together on a small spaceship and begin a marathon voyage across space to save their system of planets.

The characters are all versions of your favourite sci-fi characters from epic space movies.  The Princess, the Rebel, the priestess, the bodyguard, the prisoner and the bad-boy mercenary.  What I liked was that none of the characters were the same at the end of the book.  They'd all grown, evolved, lost some of their edges and gained knowledge.  

Kali gets some of the "empire is best rosy lens" ripped from her eyes and learns that not everyone sees the world the way she does.  I loved learning more about Ian, Max and Milla - I did not see that coming!  There is great representation of sexuality and nothing seems contrived or thrown in just because.  There is also great diversity in the characters looks - thankfully not everyone is the same ethnicity but neither does ethnicity actually define them.

There are thrills, adventure, treachery, deceit and romance.  Sue the romance could have been a tad better - it did feel a bit rushed and full on.  Especially for two very sheltered and protected characters.  There are plenty of laughs and there was a true camaraderie between this happy band of misfits.
