Well, what can I say about this book. I didn't NOT enjoy it, but I wasn't riveted or transformed either. Would give 2 1/2 stars if possible. It was just, okay. I don't regret reading it, but I would't be missing out on anything if I hadn't. Loving Frank was so much better. Not sure if that's just because FLW had a more intriguing life, or if it was in the writing. I will say that it was a very honest depiction of a marriage. Not overly romanticized or dramatized (which is maybe why it was kind of boring). But I did appreciate it's honesty. All the little struggles, quiet joys, heartbreaks, humors, and breakthroughs. That's definitely what I take away from it.

Nancy Horan foi professora e jornalista antes de começar a escrever ficção, uma forma que a autora arranjou para entender o passado, interpretando e retratando o impacto de eventos reais nas vidas de pessoas reais nos seus livros. Loving Frank foi o seu primeiro, publicado em 2007, a que se segue este Under the Wide and Starry Sky, um romance que explora a relação do autor de A Ilha do Tesouro, Dr. Jekyll e Mr. Hyde e A Flecha Negra, Robert Louis Stevenson e da sua espirituosa mulher, Fanny.
Mais do que um relato da vida e das viagens de Robert Louis Stevenson, mais do que a história por trás dos seus livros, Under the Wide and Starry Sky é uma história sobre fé, sobre duas pessoas completamente diferentes que se apaixonaram e que durante quase vinte anos, apesar dos atritos, se amaram incondicionalmente. Para além disso, a história é povoada não só da intensidade do amor de Fanny e Stevenson como também da grande influência que Fanny tinha no marido, quer na sua escrita como foi o caso de Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ou no tratamento da sua frágil saúde. Ao contrário do que se poderia pensar, Fanny tem um papel de peso neste livro, não sendo relegada como apenas a esposa do autor de A Ilha do Tesouro. Não. É com ela que começámos e acabámos esta história e se conhecemos os dissabores e alegrias de Robert também os dela nos são contados, bem como ambos os pontos de vista quer em discussões ou questões importantes, quer sobre o trabalho de ambos. 
As personagens, tão ricamente descritas quanto as paisagens, acções ou emoções relatadas neste livro são intensas e tão reais quanto nós. Cheios de defeitos e qualidades são tão capazes de grandes falhas e insultos como dos mais graciosos elogios e dos maiores gestos. São humanas, para o bem e para o mal. A forma como Nancy dá vida a Robert Louis Stevenson é de se glorificar e penso que qualquer fã do escritor irá adorar conhecê-lo neste livro bem como a Fanny, Henry James e tantos outros.
O único defeito deste livro acaba por ser alguma monotonia e demasiados detalhes pouco influentes para a história em certas partes o que as torna aborrecidas e faz com que o entusiasmo da leitura decaía na última parte do livro que acaba por ser mais parado.
Mesmo assim, Nancy Horan consegue dar-nos um romance estonteante sobre a vida e o amor de um dos autores mais adorados e versáteis de gerações de leitores. Under the Wide and Starry Sky é um livro obrigatório para qualquer fã de Robert Louis Stevenson e para qualquer um que aprecie um bom romance histórico.
