I wasn't a fan of this book, hence why it took me (three entire!!!) weeks to read it. I feel like I've read the plot before, the main character was annoying and the first person perspective jarred me the entire time. 

I finished it because I hate leaving books unfinished, but crikey, it was not easy.

I really loved this book. I was expecting it to be just sort of okay or that I wouldn't quite enjoy it as much with it being an audiobook and all, but this one just grabbed me from the beginning and didn't let go. I think this was the fastest I've ever listened to an audiobook. Usually, I drag them on because I don't really want to just sit there listening, but with this book I just had to know what happened next.

I enjoyed so many things about this book, I'm going to try to make sense of it all:

The Narration: Yes. Probably one of my favorite audiobook narrations so far. The narrator knew when to add suspense and her interpretations of the character's emotions were spot on. I think her voice really fit with the main character and made her more real to me. I think the narration really increased the likability of this book for me, because having to wait to listen to things happening and the way it was narrated increased the thrilling effects of some scenes (something I felt at the very first chapter!). Also, the fact that the main character doesn't speak made me feel like the narration was actually like I was living inside her head.

The main character: I really liked Megan and her POV. She is an incredibly sweet girl who has been through a traumatic thing and has sort of been broken by that, so she doesn't speak and she avoids most things and people. I could understand what she was going through and I really felt for her, especially when she keeps putting herself down and then back up again. It's a constant struggle inside her mind and I think the way it was written was very believable.

The Writing Style: It's hard to listen to writing style, but it really shone through for me. Rushton's choice of wording and symbolism really worked for me. The writing isn't overly lyrical or descriptive, but it's not completely dry either. It is mostly dedicated to exploring Megan's inner thought processes, which is something that really works for me.

Plot: There is actually a very interesting plot and somewhat of a mystery going on in the story, but like I said it is mainly character driven, so the plot serves the character development more than the other way around. I quite enjoy plots and books like that, and there was a thrilling aspect that kept me not wanting to press pause.

Something I'm still not sure about:

The romance: It wasn't very well developed and it seemed like it came out of the blue, because we don't really see Jasmine's side of all this. We don't know exactly how she feels about Megan and how much she actually wants to be in a relationship with her and how much of it is just her own insecurities and feeling relieved just to have someone appreciate her. At the same time, I think that's okay, because the book isn't about the romance at all, but about getting over a traumatic event, dealing with grief and the importance of friendship.

Overall, I really really liked this book. I'm seriously debating putting it as one of my favorites. I actually want to re-read at some point, and this time in print-format (which is still my preferred way to read, after all). I also can't believe this is Abbie Rushton's debut because I soo want to read more from her!
