Tilton House in Sussex war der einstige Wohnsitz des Ökonomen John Maynard Keynes, der sich bekanntermassen im Bloomsbury Circle herumtrieb und für einen Ökonomen ein überaus spannendes Leben hatte. Sein Haus ist ganz in der Nähe von “Monks House“, in dem Virginia Woolf mit ihrem Mann Leonard lebte und nur wenige Kilometer entfernt von Charleston House, dem Haus ihrer Schwester Vanessa Bell. Es herrschte ein munteres Hin- und Her zwischen den Häusern, man besuchte sich untentwegt und ging sehr viel spazieren, um die vielen Briefe wegzuschicken, die man sich damals ständig schrieb und die nach Firle zum Post Office gebracht werden mußten. Nur wenige Kilometer entfernt liegt auch das kleine Flüsschen Ouse, in dem sich Virgina Woolfe 1941 ertränkte.

This was a tough one. I think I liked it overall, but it was a chore to get through. Kinda feels like gas station Mrs. Dalloway.

An important text in early Modernism, Jacob's Room is unique and experimental in style. Ostensibly, it follows the life of Jacob Flanders, evoked purely through other people's perceptions of him. Jacob remains absent throughout. He is both representative and victim of the social values which led Edwardian society into war. The novel's composition coincided with the consolidation of Woolf's interest in feminism and she criticises the privileged thoughtless smugness of patriarchy, but also captures the pain and longing of a generation of men lost to war.
