after watching the 1966 film adaptation twice this week, i decided to read the play. if you can’t tell i’m a little obsessed with this right now. i wish i had read it first, as it was hard to get richard burton’s insane performance out of my head while reading.

albee captures two gods at war, catching mortals in the crossfire. absolutely disgusting.

Sendo uma peça de teatro (1962), foi como filme que o conheci há muitos muitos anos, mas mais do que isso, foi por meio deste filme (1966) que compreendi a importância da performance dramática e da direção de atores, e o quanto ambas eram fundamentais para que a arte cinematográfica fosse capaz de nos hipnotizar e transportar para outra realidade ao longo de duas horas. Obviamente o cinema importou do teatro o drama, e este pode por si apenas dar vida completa a um texto, mais ainda quando se tem ao seu serviço performances divinas como as de Elizabeth Taylor e Richard Burton. Mas não podemos esquecer que o cinema tem um realizador que põe em cena, que dirige os atores juntamente com as câmaras, e por via da composição, enquadramento e direção Mike Nichols acabaria tornando o texto de Edward Albee numa obra imemorial.

Mas a leitura do texto não é uma experiência perdida. Tenho referido a dificuldade de ler teatro, pela falta imensa que faz a dramatização, mas ler esta peça transportou-me até às tragédias gregas. Não sei se por me trazer continuamente à mente o filme, mas a verdade é que o vi há quase 30 anos, por isso tenho apenas impressões dele na memória. Contudo a leitura da peça consegue colocar-nos frente aos personagens, imaginá-los em movimento e sentir a sua verve, muito pela força do diálogo escrito por Albee. Podemos dizer que o texto colocado na boca dos personagens é duro, ríspido, direto, rápido e dito sempre no momento certo. Apesar de comédia, o seu tom negro transporta-o para a tragédia, com os quatro personagens a parecerem estar numa arena digladiando-se com palavras, vendo quem fere mais, mais rápido e quem chega ao final de pé.

O texto toca na essência de dois casais de académicos, pondo a nu não só as ilusões da vida em casal, mas também das ilusões da dignidade das profissões e dos seus legados. O twist final, um passe de mestre de Albee que tornaria a peça imemorável, é ele mesmo a cabal assunção de toda a ilusão, tornando a peça numa obra central do século XX.

okay I just wrote a review and it was full of shit and i'm already regretting ever writing that, so here goes take two actually

soooo i don’t really know what the actual fuck this book was, i feel really fricking dumb for not understanding and getting the story that the book is trying to tell why, could it be from the fact that i'm ignorant, dumb and shocker, inexprienced??!
cause i know, i really know that there's an underlying meaning beneath this three-act/chapter written story, BUT WHY AM I NOT FEELING IT

(view spoiler)[fun fact: me actually read some reviews by other people AND LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT THE COUPLE IS ducking CHILDLESS, i was having serious conversations and conspiracies with myself thinking that sweet george over here did some more nasty, murdery stuff, BUT YOU'RE SAYING ME THAT THERE NEVER WAS A CHILD??? the amount of dumbness, stupidity and shame this book is making me feel is insane
140 pages, about two hours of reading
and i missed the whole story

Although this was a quick read, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I had expected; 2.5 stars.
However, there were some interesting insights, especially considering this was written in the 60’s, and I do believe I would enjoy it more if I were to see it performed, whether on stage or in a movie.
