After two disappointments in a row when it comes to works of history, I'm glad that the next one I'm going to read comes highly recommended by someone who I know has discerning and similar taste to my own. (aka my dad)
The bitterness referenced in the title seeps through the entire book. No party, Allied or Axis, escapes being painted by the bitter brush. Every thing seems bleak and hopeless. Yes, all these atrocities took place during the Second World War but good things happened as well. Hitchcock avoids mentioning almost all of them. 
He also struggles with the timeline. At the start of the narrative, Hitchcock states that he is beginning with D-Day and moving forward. However, after about a third of the book, Hitchcock jumps back three years to the start of the war and from there the timeline becomes a muddled mess.
I definitely do not recommend this book.
