This book is about the triumph of evil and good people doing nothing. Mr. Kasparov supports this quote with various examples from the history of the last 30 years. Ranging from the collapse of Soviet regime and to the russian annexation of Crimea in 2014. It is hard to read this book now, when the author’s predictions turned out to be right again, unfortunately.

Russia leads full-scale war against Ukraine. It was infuriating for me to read the historical summaries of other wars and genocides where the reactions back then are the headlines these days. I guess history repeats itself on so many levels. 

Reading about 30 years of neglect in 300 pages is triggering emotionally. I vaguely remember the events described in this book myself. I was 8 years old when putin came to power. I remember my parents worried about Kursk and Nord OST. I definitely do not remember any TV news about Mr Kasparov after he left chess. But this degradation of russia didn’t happen in one night. The value of this book is that some of the stories that took 30 years are condensed to one chapter and reading about it this way makes you angry. Just like that frog that jumped out of the water when it gets too hot too fast.


My only complaint is the structure of the book. It has elements of history, biography, autobiography and it mixes all of these to prove one point over and over again. These jumping between chronological events and the writing style made me re-read some parts just to clarify what the author is trying to say with this paragraph or chapter.
