Katie MacAlister first book in a riveting series is golden for romance/fantasy lovers everywhere.

It's hard to believe You Slay Me was one of the first books in Katie MacAlister's giant dragon universe (does it have an official name? All of the series within this universe? It probably does...). This book was the first of many cute, sexy, fantasy filled books focusing on dragons. And it's safe to say - it's fantastic! This is one of my many guilty pleasures that I keep on my shelf for when I'm having a rough day. It always makes me smile because it's so sweet!

Katie is a funny writer - she's not super serious, and that's what makes this book work. It's out of the ordinary (obviously, it has dragons and all sorts of crazy creatures in it) and totally addicting. It's fast paced, full of ooey gooey romance, completely silly and filled with sexy men. It's solid chick lit!!

I can definitely see some readers having faults with it - the book doesn't take itself seriously. It's full of funny tropes and understands that it's a lighthearted, romance novel. But for me, it's everything I want in more in a romance novel. I want happy endings, sexy scenes, hot men, quirky jokes and strong, sassy leads. Drake is a bit of a jerk, even I'll admit that, but I like how his character progresses. I'm not sure how else Katie would have introduced these two in the realm of what this universe is, to be very honest.

So, overall, I love it! I'm kinda annoyed I haven't been able to get to the very newest 2017 book yet because these books always make my day!

This book was just a riot. From Rene the cabbie with all sorts of useful French phrases (frogs in the bidet???) to the Demon Newfie, I couldn't stop giggling! Once I really got into the story I just had a good time reading this book. I will definitely come back for more Aisling Grey adventures!

I have read this book once before, many moons ago, and I'm extremely happy I decided to read it again. This book is so FUNNY. It's ridiculous, interesting, *suggestive eyebrow wiggle* steamy (but not disgustingly so, in my humble opinion), and Aisling Grey is a fun though silly character to read. 

She is definitely one of those act-now-ask-questions-and-deal-with-consequences-later types, which can be irritating because, wow - stupid; but that's just the nature of the character and how else would the plot stay at a good pace, and where would McAlister put all those sarcastic quips? 

Oh and there's a talking Newfoundland. Nuf said.

Is it ok to admit I totally picked up You Slay Me initially because of that amazingly shiny cover? I saw it while I was browsing at my library’s book sale and totally fell in love with the foil cover. When I bought it, I really wasn't sure I’d ever read it. But that cover, y’all. (Don’t judge me.) Of course, it ended up being a darn good purchase because I needed an urban fantasy for Romanceopoly and this was one of the recommended books. I finally got around to reading it and can’t help but wonder why I don’t read more urban fantasy. Or any, for that matter, as this is my first.

It did take me a little bit of time to slip into the world created in You Slay Me, but I think it’s because I’m primarily a contemporary reader. Even though I wasn’t really sure initially about some of the finer points of the world, I could still appreciate Aisling’s character and her journey. But really it only took a few chapters before I was totally wrapped up in the story, anxious to see what would happen next. The mystery kept me guessing and so did Drake, if I’m being honest. I’m still not entirely sure what to make of him, but I do know I plan to read the rest of this series. I need more of Aisling, Drake and, of course, Jim.

Even with the mystery and murders in this book, I couldn’t stop giggling at some of Aisling’s one-liners. And Jim? The demon-dog? Hilarious. His antics and some of the things he said had me literally laughing out loud. What a fantastic sidekick. All in all, You Slay Me was a great introduction to urban fantasy for me. I’m always going to prefer reading contemporary or historical romance to any other sub-genre, but I’ve enjoyed opening my eyes to new ones this year with the Romanceopoly challenge. And yes, I’m totally open for recs for more urban fantasy.
