Sıfır olmayan bir şey, boşluk, kaos demek. Bu sebeple eski toplumlar sıfırdan korkarlardı. Sayı sistemleri olarak ikilik (var-yok, iyi-kötü, aydınlık-karanlık gibi), beşlik (bir elin parmak sayısı), onluk (iki elin parmak sayısı) veya yirmilik (el ve ayaklar) görüyoruz. Mesela fransızcada 80 dört tane yirmi şeklinde, 90 ise 4 tane yirmi bir tane on şeklinde söylenir. Babiller 60'lık sistem kullanmış. Mayalar 20'lik sistemi kullanıyorlardı ve sıfır vardı; rakamlar 0'dan 19'a kadardı. Olan şeyler sayılırdı. Mesela bir koyunum var, üç domates yedim gibi. Ama sıfır köpeğim var demeyiz; hiç köpeğim yok deriz. Bu sebeple sıfır'a insanlık tarihinde uzun bir süre boyunca ihtiyaç duyulmadı ve keşfedilmedi. Takvim uygulamalarında ve tarih hesaplamalarında sıfırın olmaması sorunlara sebep olmuştur. 

Olayın çok keskin bir dini yanı da var. Aristo boşluğa karşıdır; sıfır boşluk sayılır ve sıfır ile sonsuz birbirleriyle ilişkilidir. Dolayısıyla Aristo sıfır'a karşıdır. Bunu Allah'ın varlığının ispatına bağlamıştır. Dünya ve diğer gezegenler iç içe geçmiş kürelerdir. Her biri bir içindekinin dönmesini sağlar. Sonsuzluk olmadığından bu kürelerin bir sonu vardır. En sondaki küreyi Allah döndürür. Dolayısıyla Allah vardır. Kilise bu görüşün üzerine yıllarca doktrinlerini kurguladığından sonradan görüşlerini değiştiremedi. Kilise sıfır'ı lanetledi, yasakladı. Kopernik, Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, Bruno gibi matematikçi ve filozofların kilise ile kapışmalarının temelinde bu görüş vardır. Dünya dönüyor, dünya merkezde değil, boşluk, sıfır ve sonsuzluk vardır gibi bilimsel doğruları kilisenin kabul etmesi çok uzun sürdü ve kilise 15-17 yy arasında bu görüşlere karşı büyük baskı, işkence ve zulüm uygulamıştır.

Hintliler'den Araplar'a geçen sıfır (boşluk), müslümanlığın yayılmasıyla batı dünyasına da taşınmıştır. Sıfır'ı kabul etmek Aristo'yu inkar etmek anlamına gelir. Müslüman dünyası bunu kolayca yaptı (Allah evreni boşluktan yarattı) ancak kilisenin Aristo'yu inkar etmesi 4-5 asır sürdü ve çok kanlı oldu.

Modern bilimde sıfır hala etkisini ve gizemini korumaktadır. Sicim teorisinde sıfır bir nevi yasaklanmıştır; sıfır uzaklık veya sıfır zaman yoktur. Kara delikler sıfır hacimli, sonsuz kütleli kabul edilir. Büyük patlamanın sıfırdan, boşluktan geldiği düşünülüyor. I started off really liking this book and its unique treatment of zero. The first part of the book felt like history, almost like the biography it purports to be. As the time progressed closer to the present day, Seife becomes enamored with explaining the complex mathematical concepts without nuance and only at the end bring it back to zero. This is where Seife lost me. I had to power through the last third.

A compelling read. The math averse may need to skip over some parts, but the implications of zero on history, and our view of the world really couldn't be more succinctly described. An epic tale of philosophy, math, religion, science and history.
