By 1981, this had risen to 27,000 couples, 75% on the grounds of adultery or unreasonable behaviour. By 1989, it was a staggering 164,000 couples a year. This has remained a constant figure ever since: 2001 recording 157,000 divorces and 160,000 in 2002, which means 400 children a day are affected by the break-up of their parents' marriage.
