On a walking tour of the southeastern barrier islands, Creighton Dumbstruck, a military retiree and self-proclaimed genius, pontificates on all matter of subjects, most of which he misunderstands completely. He is accompanied by Dr. J.M.J.J. Watson, an unlicensed psychiatric caregiver. Watson believes he has discovered in Dumbstruck a unique opportunity to map new continents of mental disarray and hopes to publish his findings, earning the praise of his profession and the wealth he imagines will derive from his own books, a symptom of his own departure from reality. The walking tour is, however, fraught with peril for both as they attend a lycanthrope convention and visit a monastery where modern weaponry is invented.
