Excerpt from The Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle: Newly Translated Into English Now that the thoughtful study of Greek Philosophy is beginning to take its proper place, a translation of the N icomaehean Ethics, intended not so much to aid the tyro in grappling with the difficulties of the Greek text, as to reproduce the original in an intel ligible and connected. Form for the benefit of the general reader, needs no apology, except on the espe cial ground of its own demerits. In this respect I hope I have done my best to avoid all serious errors. But a translation is always a wearisome task, and one that requires most minute attention to render it as little as possible obnoxious to those differences of opinion which must always exist as to the exact meaning of any given combination of words in a dead language. I shall be more than content if I have done a little to promote that general acquaint ance with Greek Philosophy for which so much is already due to the labours of others.
