Große Gefühle – in der Literatur. Was soll an einem solchen Thema besonders sein? Was interessiert uns denn anderes, wenn wir ein Buch aufschlagen? Wir erwarten doch selbstverständlich, dass wir in den folgenden Lektüre-Stunden, Tagen und Wochen mit der Schilderung, Inszenierung, Dramatisierung von Gefühlen geradezu und auf die intensivste Weise konfrontiert, ja vielleicht sogar von ihnen heimgesucht werden. Die Literatur ist schon immer der geeignete Aktionsraum für das Bedürfnis, die eigenen wie die Gefühle anderer zu erkunden, soviel ist sicher. Aber was ist unter Großen Gefühlen zu verstehen? Die Antwort kann nur in der Beschäftigung mit den literarischen Texten selbst liegen, denn, so die Ausgangshypothese der Vorlesungsreihe, Große Gefühle sind solche, die durch die Literatur selbst, durch Texte groß gemacht werden. Um große zu sein und als solche zu wirken, bedürfen sie also der ästhetischen Darstellung. Die Eifersucht z.B. wird allererst in Prousts monumentaler Recherche zu einem großen Gefühl, genauso wie der Lebensekel, der ennui, in Flauberts Madame Bovary oder die Angst in Ingeborg Bachmanns «Todesarten»-Projekt. Strong emotions – in literature. What is special about such a theme? What else interests us when we open a book? Surely it goes without saying that, when we read, we will be intensively confronted, perhaps even haunted, by the depiction, representation and dramatization of emotions. Literature has always offered a suitable space for our need to explore our own emotions and those of others. But what do we mean by strong emotions? We can only answer that question by engaging with actual literary texts since, according to the underlying hypothesis of this series of lectures, strong emotions are those that are made strong through literature itself, through texts. In order to become strong and appear so, they require aesthetic presentation.
