Du 11 juillet 2018 au 6 janvier 2019, la Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain célèbre la richesse et les couleurs extraordinaires des dessins, formes et figures présents dans l'art latino-américain avec l'exposition Géométries américaines, du Mexique à la Terre de Feu. A travers une pluralité d'oeuvres et d'objets, de la céramique à la peinture en passant par la sculpture, la photographie, l'architecture ou les peintures corporelles, cette exposition propose une plongée au coeur de l'abstraction géométrique en Amérique latine, de la période précolombienne à nos jours. Dans le cadre de l'exposition, la Fondation Cartier publie un catalogue proposant de découvrir toutes les oeuvres de l'exposition à travers près de 300 images, des cartes et des notices d'oeuvres. Les contributions d'Olga de Amaral, d'Elisabetta Andreoli, de Ticio Escobar, de César Paternosto, de Gabriela Rangel et de Lux Vidal éclairent ce vaste panorama et mettent en lumière la continuité des lignes et des formes parcourant l'art latino-américain à travers le temps.

Massive work considered an important contribution to the aesthetical interpretation of the artistic process in Paraguay. The study, first published 20 years ago focuses on the fundamental characteristics of visual art developed in the country since Pre-Hispanic times, and where the term "art" is used in a comprehensive way analyzing the artistic developments in their historical context and highlighting the cultural conflict the imposition and assimilation of new artistic forms represented. The study did not include architecture as the author considered it a complex analytical study by its own. The book is divided in two main sections: the first reviews the Indian visual arts, the art from the colonial period and 19th century (mestizo art, criollo art, missionary art, etc.). A second part is dedicated to the 20th century.

The Tomáraho, a subgroup of the Ishir (Chamacoco) of Paraguay, are one of the few remaining indigenous populations who have managed to keep both their language and spiritual beliefs intact. They have lived for many years in a remote region of the Gran Chaco, having limited contact with European or Latin American cultures. The survival of the Tomáraho has been tenuous at best; at the time of this writing there were only eighty-seven surviving members. Ticio Escobar, who lived extensively among the Tomáraho, draws on his acquired knowledge of Ishir beliefs to confront them with his own Western ideology, and records a unique dialogue between cultures that counters traditional anthropological interpretation. The Curse of Nemur-- which is part field diary, part art critique, and part cultural anthropology--offers us a view of the world from an entirely new perspective, that of the Ishir. We acquire deep insights into their powerful and enigmatic narrative myths, which find expression in the forms of body painting, feather decoration, dream songs, shamanism, and ritual. Through dramatic photographs, native drawings, extensive examination of color and its importance in Ishir art, and Escobar's lucid observation, The Curse of Nemur illuminates the seamless connection of religious practice and art in Ishir culture. It offers a glimpse of an aesthetic "other," and in so doing, causes us to reexamine Western perspectives on the interpretation of art, belief, and Native American culture.
