In my youth (last summer) I read “Fever Dream” and wanted to blame the translator for my not loving the book. I now am familiar with Megan McDowell, in fact I am in love both with her translations and her advocacy for translations and translators, so I now look to Schweblin as the source of my worries. She is a strong writer, but not my favorite Argentinian short story horror author I now know.

Schweblin’s stories give you the kind of creeps that make you turn your head around, wondering if there is someone in the house with you.

Okay, maybe not all stories are creepy, some are just plain sad like the elderly woman Lola who clearly suffers from dementia and paranoia and always suspicious that the boy next door is up to no good, just because his family is poor

The seven houses in the book are the seven (separate) stories about people with different lives, that are somehow feeling unsafe, even in their houses, that some of them are often drivinh away and looking at other houses, just because. Some are afraid what others might find in their houses, some are just, well, strange.

Why the three stars? I find some of the stories are quite jumbled and confusing so it was hard for me to get thru this book, despite its compact size

Las historias de Samanta te dejan con una sensación incómoda que se incrusta en ti. A pesar de que sus cuentos se desarrollan en situaciones cotidianas y las vivencias de sus personajes, el realismo caótico y perturbador que enfrentan es inquietante representan a personajes que en algún momento dejan el hogar, regresan a él de alguna forma o están atrapados dentro de esas casas. Simbólicamente, esto representa a familias y parejas con lazos rotos, a punto de romperse o ya rotos, pero que no lo aceptan directamente o se niegan a verlo.

La voz narrativa de la autora es fácilmente reconocible por su estilo propio.

Seven Empty Houses is a collection of primo domestic horror a la Shirley Jackson. My favorites are "None of That" and "Breath from the Depths." "My Parents and My Children" was a bit of a different speed and had me laughing at the end. After reading this set of stories and her novel Fever Dream, I can say that Schweblin is now firmly on my list of favorite contemporary authors.

Çağdaş Arjantin edebiyatını çok heyecan verici bulduğumu daha önce çok söyledim, Samanta Schweblin de bu heyecanımın baş sorumlularından biri açıkçası. Schweblin edebiyatı diye bir şey var, şüphesiz ki var. Okuduğum üçüncü kitabı itibariyle iyice emin oldum bundan, bana yazarını söylemeden bir öyküsünü okutsanız “bunu Schweblin yazmış” derim çünkü çok kendine has bir şeyler yapıyor.

Daha önce kendisiyle ilgili yazdığım her yorumda geçen kelimeyi bu kitap için de yineleyeceğim: tekinsizlik. Ama ne tekinsizlik, insan okurken sebebini tam bilemediği bir tuhaflık sezinliyor, adını koyamadığı bir huzursuzluk duyuyor. Ve bu tekinsizlik bir gerilimi beslemek için oraya konmuş suni bir şey değil, anlatıya içkin bir tekinsizlik oradaki. Schweblin’in dünyasında havada bir sis gibi asılı duran bir huzursuzluk var.

Yedi Boş Ev’de genelde evler etrafında kurgulanmış yedi öykü var. Öykülerin bir diğer ortak noktası ise delilik gibi: akıl sağlığı yerinde olmayan insanlar var öykülerde - ya da öyle mi acaba? İlk okuduğum Kurtarma Mesafesi de, ardından gelen Ağızdaki Kuşlar da benzer bir soru bırakmıştı sanki ama bu defa daha da net soruyor sanki Schweblin: Nedir ki delilik? Aklı sağlıklı veya sağlıksız kılan sınırı tam nerede çekmek lazım? Schweblin ve yazdığı aykırı insanlar acayip kafamı karıştırıyor bu konuda.

Ezcümle, nefis bir kitap bence bu. İnsanı ilk cümlede içine alan bu kuvette kısa öyküler yazmak her yazarın harcı değil. Vallahi hayranım size sayın Schweblin. Saygılarımla.
